November is here and we are entering the Season Of The Most. Many say the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, but I say it’s just The Most. The season of the most feelings. The season of the most houseguests. The season of the most stress. And sometimes the season of the most grief. As you can tell, I’m anticipating lots of mosts in my world. Here’s a few ways I intend to handle them – welcome to this month’s Mixed Bag!
The Most Houseguests
I have hosted most of the major holidays at our house for many years now. Hosting itself is a substantial undertaking but layer on House Guests and it can quickly overwhelm you if you aren’t prepared. Over the years I’ve learned many lessons about how to make the arrival of houseguests pleasant. For them and for me. Have you ever found yourself resenting someone you have invited to stay in your home because of the stress you feel leading up to their arrival? Well, maybe you haven’t but I HAVE, and it isn’t a fun feeling. So, in the spirit of The Most House Guests season I’ve created a free checklist to help you plan ahead. So when they arrive you can be excited instead of stressed!
The Most Grief
The Season of The Most Grief sounds a little extreme but for some the loss of daylight hours and outdoor warmth intensify any grief we are currently carrying. I’m in the process of losing someone I love to cancer and it somehow feels worse because it’s happening during this season. There’s also the grief we’ve carried for years that stays in the background for most of the year and then aggressively rises to the surface just in time for the holidays! I miss my mom so much this time of year, it’s The Most for sure!
I have no solution for this challenge, but putting it down in words helps some. Also crying to my friends on dog walks, hugging my dad HARD and listening to this wonderful playlist my Radio DJ daughter made. Find some things that allow you to release. Also remember that feelings are visitors; go ahead and let them come in. They will not, in fact, kill you.
The Most Generations
Whether you are hosting or visiting the holidays are often multi-generational affairs. Usually 3, but sometimes even 4 generations gathering together can be interesting to navigate. When any number of the family party has traveled for the occasion there is always a worry about what activities are palatable for the young folks as well as the old.
Obviously a holiday dinner together is a no-brainer. But beyond that? I have always gotten the best outcomes when I suggest multiple activities throughout the course of the weekend/holiday. The individual generations can opt in where they’d like. Some people are up for a hike. Some would enjoy a movie. And some are good for anything but need time for a nap in between!
If you are gathering with family this season like I am, lay out a buffet of potential activities, communicate them ahead of time, and let your people join in where they are most comfortable!
